CB-IR(A) Competency Based Instrument Rating

The goal of the competency based modular IR training is to instruct PPL or CPL holders considering previous instrument flight training and appropriate experience. It aims to convay the required qualification for aircraft operation under IFR and in IMC weather conditions.

The training is suitable for private aircraft owners since 30 of 40 hours may be completed with the own aircraft also outside the ATO.

Requirements

  • The applicant for CB-IR(A) must at least hold a CPL(A) or PPL(A) license and must have completed 50 hours being the pilot in command of airplanes, TMGs, helicopters or airships thereof at least 10 hours on fixed wing airplanes.
  • The applicant must hold an aviation medical class 1 or class 2 with the additional checkup of pure-tone audiometry.
  • The AEROTOURS ATO ensures that the student meets the requirements for the training according part-MED and part-FCL.

CB-IR (A) - Single engine aircraft

The acquisition of a CB-IR(A) within this modular course is evaluated based on existing competence.  Nevertheless, the applicant must fulfil the minimum requirements mentioned below.  For the reaching of the prescribed competence additional training may be necessary.

  • A competency-based modular IR (A) course for single engine airplanes must include at least 40 hours instrument flying time with an IR instructor of which up to 25 hours may be completed with an FNPT II.

If the applicant :

  1. has completed an instrument flight training with an IRI(A) or an FI(A) who has the right for the realisation of the IR training.

  2. proves previous flying time under IFR as PIC on airplanes with an authorisation that includes the right to fly under IFR and in IMC, up to 30 hours can be credited for the above mentioned 40 hours.
  • If the applicant has already finished other instrument flying time with an IR instructor, this time can be credited with up to 15 hours for the necessary 40 hours.
  • The flight training must enclose, in any case, at least 10 hours instrument flying time with an IR instructor in an AEROTOURS ATO airplane.
  • The instrument flight training with an IR instructor must total at least 25 hours.

CB-IR (A) - Multi engine aircraft

AEROTOURS ATO ensures that an applicant for a multi engine Cb-IR(A) course, who so far does not hold a multi engine class rating, has completed the training for multi engine aircraft according Part-FCL.725.Aa) in the extent of 6 hours and attained the exam maturity for this training before the beginning of the CB-IR(A)- course.

  • A competency based modular IR(A) course for multi engine aircraft must include at least 45 hours instrument flying time with an IR instructor  of which up to 30 hours may be in an FNPT II.

If the applicant :

  1. has completed an instrument flight training with an IRI(A) or an FI(A) who has the right for the realisation of the IR training.
  2. proves previous flying time under IFR as PIC on airplanes with an authorisation that includes the right to fly under IFR and in IMC,

this time can be credited with up to 35 hours for the above mentioned 45 hours.

  • If the applicant has already finished other instrument flying time with an IR instructor, this time can be credited with up to 15 hours of the necessary 45 hours.
  • The flight training must enclose, in any case, at least 10 hours instrument flying time with an IR instructor in an AEROTOURS ATO airplane.
  • The whole extend of the training with an IR instructor must total at least 25 hours of which at least 15 hours must be completed in a multi engine airplane.

Theoretical training

The AEROTOURS conducts the theoretical part of the training combining 72 hours eLearning and 8 hours complementary instruction. By means of an independent certification with the central office for distance learning in form of a modern online based distance learning course eAcademy we can offer you an optimum supervision until theoretical examination. The theoretical training and examination contains the following 7 subjects :

  • Air law
  • Aircraft general knowledge - instruments
  • Flight planning and monitoring
  • Human performance
  • Meteorology
  • Radio navigation
  • IR radio communication (AZF)

The theoretical examination must be taken not later than 18 months after the beginning of the education.

Should you come to us without any previous knowledge you should project at least 4 months for the CB-IR(A) theoretical training given that you have appropriate motivation and learning willingness.

The distance learning course for the acquisition of the instrument flight rating is the most modern form of theoretical education and can be startet at any time.
